Microchip AVR DA MCU-based Multifunction Steering Wheel Solution with Heated HoD Hands-off Detection + Touch

Published Published: Apr 25, 2023      Automotive Electronics      Share:

More and more cars are equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are required by law to keep the driver's hands on the steering wheel in order to take over the vehicle quickly in case of an emergency. Therefore, HoD (Hands-off Detection) technology is very necessary.

There are two mainstream HoD detection solutions on the market today:

Steering torque detection scheme:

  • It is by detecting the torque applied to the steering wheel to determine whether there is hand control of the steering wheel.
  • The advantage is that the principle is simple and low cost.
  • The disadvantage is that it is easy to be deceived, for example, by hanging an object of appropriate weight on the side of the steering wheel to fool the detection.

Capacitive touch detection scheme:

  • It is by detecting the effect of human hands on the steering wheel to the ground capacitance size, so as to detect whether there are hands controlling the steering wheel.
  • The advantage is that it is not easy to be deceived, and can be partitioned detection to determine the grip gesture and position.
  • The disadvantage is that the technical difficulty is on the high side, the effect of heating on capacitance detection, the effect of gloves on the signal, the consistency of the sensor, and the higher requirements for software processing algorithms.

Microchip's solution not only realizes HoD function, but also integrates touchpad, button, slider, wheel and other functions to realize touch multifunction steering wheel, reducing system cost while improving human-computer interaction experience.

►Core Technology Advantage

Microchip's HoD Hands-off Detection + Touch Multifunction Steering Wheel has the following technical advantages:

1、 AVR DA MCU single-chip implementation of HoD off-hand detection + touch pad, button, slider, scroll wheel function, the overall system cost is reduced.

2、 Support three-layer, double-layer, single-layer Sensor structure, support steering wheel heating, wide range of applications.

3、 Support HoD partition detection, can judge the position and gesture of manual grip.

4、 Touchpad gesture recognition: sliding direction, rotation direction, click/double click. Rich human-computer interaction experience.

5、 Drive shielding technology, can improve the capacitive detection performance, support the wearing of gloves touch.

6、 Extendable haptic feedback (vibration / sound / flash), ISELED driver.

7、 Low-cost high-performance automotive-grade MCU, to meet the ISO26262 functional safety requirements.

8、 External LIN SBC to achieve LIN communication, through the SPI external MCP25625 or MCP251863 can be extended CAN / CAN-FD communication.

9、 Convenient development environment, visual parameter debugging, perfect reference design materials, strong technical support team, fast to market.
