ST-Ericsson

ST-Ericsson was a joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson that operated from 2009 to 2013. The company was established with the goal of combining the wireless semiconductor businesses of both companies to develop and provide innovative mobile platform solutions.

ST-Ericsson focused on developing and supplying system-on-chip (SoC) solutions, baseband processors, connectivity solutions, and other related technologies for mobile devices. These solutions were used in a range of products, including smartphones, feature phones, tablets, and other wireless devices.

The company aimed to provide integrated solutions that combined application processing, multimedia capabilities, connectivity, and modem technologies. Their offerings encompassed platforms based on various wireless technologies, including 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE.

However, despite initial ambitions, ST-Ericsson faced challenges and struggled to compete in the highly competitive mobile chipset market. In 2013, the decision was made to wind down the joint venture, and ST-Ericsson ceased operations. The two parent companies, STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, subsequently transitioned their respective businesses related to wireless technology independently.

It's worth noting that while ST-Ericsson is no longer in operation, both STMicroelectronics and Ericsson continue to be prominent players in their respective industries. STMicroelectronics remains a leading semiconductor company, and Ericsson is a global provider of telecommunications equipment and services.
