- The SOJ-36, or Small Outline J-lead 36-pin package, is a classic through-hole component once prevalent for memory and logic ICs. While largely superseded by surface-mount technology, it remains in use for legacy system maintenance and certain industrial applications.
- This package features a rectangular plastic body with 18 J-shaped gull-wing leads on each long side, for a total of 36 pins. The leads have a standard 1.27 mm (50 mil) pitch and are designed for insertion into a PCB's plated through-holes, providing a robust mechanical connection.
- Engineers historically selected SOJ packages for their reliable through-hole solder joints, good thermal and power handling compared to early surface-mount options, and ease of automated insertion. Its J-lead design offers some stress relief during thermal cycling.
